March — Let Spring Begin!
It’s no surprise this year that International Day of Happiness coincides with the first day of spring! After a long and grueling battle with winter, we Canadians are more than ready for a little sunshine and warm weather and a whole lot less snow. March 2018 boasts a packed calendar, with Easter arriving early this year, in a month that already hosts many special events. March birthstones include the Aquamarine, Jade and Bloodstone and the flower is the Daffodil or the Jonquil. In Canada, the fruit and/or vegetable of the month is the humble potato – no surprise for a country that loves to celebrate its Irish heritage this month!
In real estate, the start of 2018 has certainly seen a dramatic shift from the market conditions experienced last year during the same period. The name “February”, comes from the Latin word “februarius” which means purification. It’s a month where people can leave the holidays behind and take a breath of fresh – albeit cold – air.
February is the month that transitions us into spring as it is the third month of winter, so the meaning and symbolism really demonstrate a purified transition. Fun fact: this year, February will pass without a single full moon. The last time this happened was in 1999!
February’s birthstone is the Amethyst, the stone of spirituality, wisdom and security. February’s flower is not the Rose, surprisingly, but the Primrose and the Violet, representing faithfulness, loyalty and watchfulness. January marks the beginning of a brand new year and offers 31 wonderful days to set goals, get excited about the future and release the past. Here’s a bit of trivia: January was named after the Roman god Janus, who had two faces which allowed him to look forward into the coming year and backwards into the past one. The original Roman calendar only had 10 months; January and February were added later. It was in 1622 that January 1st became the start of the new year; prior to that it was March 25. Who knew?!
The first day of January is an interesting date as it is both the furthest away and closet date to December 31. January’s birthstone is the Garnet, the stone of passionate devotion and health, and its flower is the Carnation, representing love, fascination and distinction.
